This holiday might be a good time to celebrate Bedford's sacrifice in WWII. More soldiers were lost as a percentage than any other town in the US. To honor their sacrifice, the National D Day Memorial was constructed here. On both May 23 and May 25, there will be special programs at the Memorial.

Moonlight Serenade See the Memorial at dusk on this special Memorial Day weekend. The Jefferson Choral Society will perform an evening concert of 1940s and patriotic music from 8:00PM to 9:00PM. The concert kicks off at 7PM with special music by local performers including Keith Campbell. The Memorial will remain open until 10:00PM. Regular fees apply. Bring your own chair.

Remembering Their Sacrifice To observe Memorial Day, the Memorial will have a wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to those who have given their lives in service to our nation. The ceremony includes special music and speakers. The Memorial will also dedicate several new narrative plaques. Free admission from 10AM until noon. For more information, call 540-586-3329.

Lynchburg Airport Turnaround! Lynchburg Airport saw it's best results since the year 2000. Airport Director Mark F. Courtney says 14,517 people flew out of Lynchburg last month.  He says that's the best showing since the decline in airport levels and demand precipitated by the 9-11 terrorist attacks. He says then  increase to new services offered at the airport.  Two additional daily flights were recently added by Delta Connection and US Airways Express.  The airport also successfully lobbied its airlines to lower rates for Lynchburg flights last fall.

A fifth US Airways flight is being added May 28th, bringing Lynchburg's total daily departure number to eight. April traffic represented a 97 percent overall increase above passenger numbers for the same month in 2008. My opinion is that the results are a direct result of the lowering of prices to be more competative with other area airports. Most of our friends have avoided Lynchburg for vacation or other travel because of the high fares. Wonder of all wonders, when they lower prices, we stop going to other airports! And that's good for all of us especially in this economy!

Bet you think Monticello was the first octagonal house in America and you would be wrong! The first house was built by Thomas Jefferson just outside Lynchburg, VA in Bedford County, VA in Forest, VA.

After a complete exterior renovation, Poplar Forest will reopen April 1, also celebrating it's 200th anniversary. Poplar Forest will be open through November ever day except Tuesdays from 10-4pm.

PLAY BALL!

Did you know Lynchburg has a minor league baseball team, called the Hillcats? We've had many noteable going through the system including the infamous Dwight Gooden. Lynchburg is blessed with having a ball stadium that is only a few years old, located close to the expressway and convient to a wide area around Lynchburg! Their season starts April 22, 2009.

It's time to throw out that ball! Take the kids and have a good time!
